Information technology is defined as the “development, installation and implementation of computer systems and applications.” According to Wikipedia, “The term in its modern sense first appeared in a 1958 article published in the Harvard Business Review, in which authors Leavitt and Whisler commented that "the new technology does not yet have a single established name. We shall call it information technology." The term stuck and is today one of the fastest growing industries in the world. In fact, the term Wikipedia is a new technological term itself, known my almost everyone who uses a computer. Since 1958, a whole new programming language has emerged, thanks to the era of computers, cell phones, texting, and social networking.

IT includes areas such as computer software, computer hardware, computer programming and data constructs. In response to the ever changing world of technology, IT support jobs and technical jobs have become more available and desirable. Most IT jobs require a degree or certification. IT online degrees are readily available today from many schools. This is becoming a much more popular option due to the convenience of taking classes from the comfort of home, or working around busy schedules. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, along with the Association for Computing Machinery have recently collaborated to form curriculum standards for IT degrees as a distinct field of study, separate from studies in Computer Science and Information Systems.

IT professionals perform various functions, including designing complex computer network systems, designing information databases, networking, software design, engineering of computer hardware, programming, management and administration of entire computer systems. The technological world is expanding at a rapid pace and with no end in sight. This will no doubt create the need for even more IT support jobs and technical jobs. In just the past few years, we’ve seen incredible advances in technologies such as cell phones, televisions, automobiles, personal computers, notebook computers, tablet computers, smart phones and so forth. It’s an exciting time, full of possibilities for those interested in the field. In 2009, IT services revenue worldwide totaled 764 billion dollars.
